Training

UConn Health is committed to providing a safe research and work environment to all our faculty and staff. The Office of Radiation Safety provides training modules for this reason. These modules also allow us to impart knowledge of basic radiation awareness for personnel who work with RGDs, as well as those who may enter areas where these devices and RAM are utilized. Records of training are maintained by the ORS. The following courses are offered:

Basic Radiation Safety - This course is provided to all UConn Health employees during new hire orientation. It provides an overview of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources, the dosimetry policy, ways to minimize exposure to maintain ALARA, and other topics. Method: SABA.

Declared Pregnant Worker – This training is provided to individuals who have voluntarily declared themselves pregnantIt covers the pregnancy declaration process, radiation risks to the fetus, exposure limits for the parent and conceptus, dosimetry procedures, and ways to minimize exposure.
Method: In person, or online via Teams/Zoom.

Dosimetry Badge Training – This course is provided to personnel who are assessed and determined to meet the state and federal requirements for personal monitoring devices. It includes instructions on their wear, use, and care. Method: Online.

Med Student Training – This training is provided to medical students observing cases in the OR, or Cath Lab. It covers radiation safety and ALARA principles when working next to physicians operating under the guidance of fluoroscopy.
Method: In person, or online via Teams/Zoom.

Nuclear Medicine – Various training is provided to employees, radiology residents, physicians, and Gateway Community College students who will be working in Nuclear Medicine with Radioactive Materials (RAM)It covers basic radiation safety, regulatory requirements, waste management, and best practices for ALARA & contamination control.
Method: In person, or online via Teams/Zoom.

Oncology 6 Nurse Training – This is provided to nurses working in the Oncology unit on UT6It covers basic radiation safety, caring for patients receiving nuclear medicine therapies, and what to do in the event of emergencies.
Method: In person.

Radioactive Materials Training for Researchers This training is provided to researchers looking to use radioactive materials, and their assistants.  It covers radiation safety, radiation biology, physical properties of most used materials, how to use and store materials properly, how to survey the lab for contamination, how to inventory, request waste pickups, and what to do in the event of a spill. Researchers wishing to become Authorized Users must contact the ORS at the number below to schedule a training lecture, as required by the Radiation Safety Committee prior to any protocol approval or any work with RAM.
Method: In person.
