Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Leo Wolansky has indicated his intention to step down as Chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Therapeutics at end of June 2026. Dr. Wolansky plans to markedly increase his work as a teleradiologist. He feels that a Chair needs to be onsite, where the patients and most of the staff are. We are thankful to Leo for his service and leadership for the last nine years during which there has been unprecedented growth of faculty and clinical productivity.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Michael T. Baldwin, MD as Interim Chair of the Department. For Dr. Baldwin, this appointment is not simply a professional milestone; it is the latest chapter in a family story that has been woven into the fabric of the University of Connecticut for nearly a century. His grandfather, Chet Baldwin, founded the Philosophy Department at what was then Connecticut Agricultural College in 1932, and served as the chair until 1961. His father, Robert C. Baldwin, also devoted his entire career to UConn, retiring in 1991 as the Dean of the School of Continuing Medical Education. Now, Dr. Baldwin carries that UConn family legacy forward and seeks to spend his career in service to our patients, students, colleagues, and state.

After completing diagnostic radiology residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where he served as a chief resident, he completed fellowships in pediatric radiology at Children's Hospital Boston, and in musculoskeletal radiology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Baldwin returned home to UConn Health bringing dual radiology subspecialty expertise in pediatric and musculoskeletal radiology coupled with broad clinical and medical education experience in both the academic and private practice settings.

He has been a cornerstone of the academic and clinical community here at UConn Health for the past decade, serving as Associate Professor of Radiology and as Vice Chair of the Department since 2021. His devotion to medical student and resident education has helped shape the careers of UConn medical students and radiology residents through his creation of the Longitudinal Radiology Clerkship and as the Assistant Residency Program Director. His teaching efforts have been recognized by numerous Outstanding Educator Awards and Kaiser Permanente Awards for Clinical Teaching, as well as medical student teaching honors at Harvard Medical School and radiology resident education at Hartford Hospital, as well as his 2022 induction into UConn's Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, for which he proudly serves as a faculty advisor.

As Interim Chair, Dr. Baldwin steps into this new administrative role as someone we know personally, for whom UConn has always been home. His clinical excellence, compassionate care, collegiality, and professionalism will serve the Department well.

Please welcome and support Mike in his new role.

Sincerely,
